Why I Race

We’re on the cusp of racing season so I’m going to do a bit of navel-gazing about why I race bicycles.
1. I primarily race because it gives me an excuse to train, which I love to do. Training, in turn, allows me to not feel so bad about the entire bag of pork rinds I ate today.
2. Racing allows me to take unpaid vacation days to travel to exciting destinations such as Springfield, MO, Fayetteville, AL, and Burlington, IA.
3. Because I race I have a sense of moral superiority over my fellow shoppers when I’m looking at sports drinks at the grocery store. Sports drinks are made for people like me who race; soda is for the rest of you non-racing people.
4. Racing gives me a really cool sounding excuse for missing events that I don’t want to attend in the first place. “Yeah, I’m not going to be able to attend your (boring) wedding shower because I have a race that day. It’s one of my A races.”.
Although there are more reasons than the above, these are probably the most important reasons why I race. As racing season approaches I urge each of you to take a moment and reflect on why it is that you do this to yourself.
Yours truly,
Baby Beavis
