Starting Points

Since moving into my permanent St. Louis digs earlier this month, I’ve been unpacking in bits and pieces. Yesterday, I discovered my first pair of cycling road shoes inside a box full of boots, sandals and sneakers. Given that I’m on my fourth pair of road shoes and pairs two and three are long gone, the discovery surprised me. I’m not sure why I saved them – especially given that the large majority of my belongings were purged through, sold or lost when I moved – but as I pulled them, and their accompanying memories, out of the box, I … Continue Reading

Flat? FALSE!

We’ve all been there. You could call it the Bermuda Triangle of cycling where momentum strangely disappears. First you check your rear wheel for a flat. Secondly, you make sure your brake pads are not stuck. Am I in a head wind? You may even second guess your training program.

Why do I feel like this?

Am I getting weaker instead of stronger?

Should I have had the Clif bar instead of the Carmello?

Could this be hypoglycemia because Carmellos do not contain protein or B vtiamins?

Did I stretch my IT band properly?

Am I properly hydrated? Should I have drank some … Continue Reading

“That Girl”

I’ve been on a variety of cycling-related trips (or I’ve turned non-cycling trips into cycling trips out of sheer desperation) lately. I’ve been to a variety of places, over vastly different terrain, and yet there is a common denominator – someone is always “that girl.” (To protect the innocent, and to make this appropriate for our women’s club, I will refer to “that girl” even when I really mean “that guy” – and I ALWAYS mean “that guy”).

Who is “that girl” you may ask? “That girl” is the one who … Continue Reading

Team Rev Recap: Jan 19-25

I had a phone call with Dave Poole of Aerocat this morning. As we were wrapping things up, Dave said something like, “So you really ride in this weather down there, huh?” I told him we do. Filled him in on Frostbike. Detailed Sunday’s snowy conditions and Saturday’s well-below freezing temperatures and winds. Encouraged him to check out Velodrama for blog entry and photographic evidence. “Wow, you ladies are tough,” he said. “We are tough,” I replied.

We are tough.

30 women rode their bikes at Frosbike this weekend. Outdoors. We bundled, zipped and layered. We filled our … Continue Reading

Frostbike: Test of Wills

It has been cold before. Precip however, has never been encountered by the Frostbike riders. What Mike Roberts predicted to be flurries turned out to be a little more substantial. (Turned out to be a fluffy layer of pretty white stuff dumped seemingly–beautifully–all at once.)

Was an eye batted by a Frostbike series member? Heck no! “Watch out for the slick painted surfaces” was the warning called out by Steph, our fearless leader. That being said, we trudged bravely from the warm confines of Velocity Café out into the frozen … Continue Reading
